In this case, the consensus is accurate and it is: 1-6. season: excellent. Deep world-building, intelligent dialogue, Hollywood-worthy epic sets, expert acting, detailed plot, real surprises, great soundtrack used sparingly.
GoT is definitely worth watching in these seasons
Season 7: Suddenly you notice that the quality of the writing and plot has plummeted. There are inexplicable ideas, inconsistent characterization and soap opera dramas. But at least the entertainment value is still very high, so it’s considered good. Season 8: This land drains to depths you didn’t think possible. The writing has become so amateurish that the still-fantastic production values are no longer enough to save it.
Fatal for fiction
If you ever liked Lost but were surprised by how bad the last season was, you’re in familiar territory here. The biggest problem with the final season was that it took us out of the story and made us wonder about its many weak points. We lost our suspension of disbelief. It also ruined the series to the point where re-watching the whole series is pointless. May I recommend a GoT marathon for newbies?
But it’s not the best series ever
Yes, the first 6 seasons are worth the later disappointment. It could have been, but dropping the ball in the final stretch puts it behind the following top series more worthy of your marathon: Battlestar Galactica (2003-2008) Twin Peaks (all 3 seasons plus the movie) Breaking Bad
