James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis share their characters
Chronology
A family is invited to spend an entire weekend in a remote house in the countryside, but as the weekend progresses, they realize that the family who invited them has a dark side. found them very intriguing and complementary to each other as they discuss their different approaches to the craft. The story is inspired by the experiences of Christian Tafdrup, the original Danish director of Speak No Evil (2022), who befriended a Dutch couple while on holiday in Tuscany with his wife. Although the Dutch were somewhat socially awkward, the two couples got on very well, and upon returning home, Tafdrup received an invitation from a Dutch family to move to the Netherlands. He briefly considered it, but decided that it would be strange to stay with people he didn’t really know; his story for the film was born when he unleashed his darkest fantasies about what might have happened if he had agreed (keeping in mind that the original Dutch couple never gave off bad vibes). In this remake, the nationalities of the two families have been changed to American and British.
It’s pretty clear

Act One: The setup is masterful
Performed by Laura Branigan Licensed to Warner Music UK Ltd. No. I’m not talking about McAvoy, but we’ll get to that. Not much happens in all this action, and yet I found myself smiling and intrigued. It’s a great example of how you can still build intrigue without needing action, or worse, without an opening scene that spoils what happens later in the film. Act Two: Okay, so no major damage is done now.
And there are a few dumb character decisions
We should see some escalation, but it feels much bigger. Act Three: The escalation finally happens, but not enough. The potential doesn’t reach the heights to make it memorable. One of them nearly made me facepalm in the theater. As for Scott McNay’s husband, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a more worthless husband in my life. I know it was on purpose and it didn’t detract from my enjoyment, but I kept thinking, “I’m up, kid…” Overall, this was a mildly enjoyable one-watch.
But McAvoy is a beast
The reason I’m disappointed is that it could have been great if they “chose” more. (1 show, opening 9/12/2024). The final season of “What We Do in the Shadows” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month. Check out our October schedule for more information!
